The Cincinnatti Zoo welcomed a new baby giraffe on Saturday, April 2. Mom Tessa and baby are bonding, and we expect to hear the baby's gender soon after which there will probably be a contest to choose the name. The Rhode Island connection comes from Papa Kimbaubau or "Kimba," who was previously at Roger Williams Park Zoo in Providence.
Embedded below is a video from the Cincinnati Zoo showing the birth and first few hours of the new arrival.
Did you know that giraffes give birth standing up, and the baby takes a six foot drop to the ground?
Warning: if watching a giraffe give birth is not your speed, best to skip this one.
If you like watching giraffes, but not as much the giving birth part, Roger Williams Park Zoo has their own giraffe-cam. You won't see the new baby in Cincinnati, but the Providence giraffes will be there.
