1. Tell us about your work
I am a self taught jewelry designer. I create one-of-a-kind jewelry inspired by sea glass found on Rhode Island beaches and also from lampwork beads, clay beads, copper enamel , sterling silver and pewter charms. I love blending colors of various beads and components together to make interesting pieces. I am always experimenting with different mediums and techniques. Recently I have started to use alcohol inks paint on metal charms. Vintage items are always a pleasure to use in my jewelry when available. Creating with a mixture of metal, glass, clay, silk and linen cord is most rewarding.

2. Is there a story behind the name of your business?
When I named my shop Designed by the Sea, I lived in a cottage not far from the sea in Westerly, RI. I started my shop by selling genuine sea glass necklaces, bracelets and earrings and have evolved from there.

3. How did you come to be a professional artist/crafter/designer?
I have always been interested in the arts and design and have taken art classes at the University of Rhode Island and the Community College of Rhode Island. After retiring in 2008, I began making jewelry and a short time later opened my shop on Etsy.

4. Where do you draw your inspiration?
I have to say my inspiration comes from the color and texture of the beads and charms that I work with. I love designing with items that are rustic, organic, primitive, earthy and natural.

5. What’s your favorite item to create?
My favorite items to make are earrings. Each pair is unique and very different from the previous pair.

6. What’s your best seller?
My best sellers are probably sea glass necklaces.

7. How long have you been in Rhode Island?
I have live in Rhode Island all my life.

8. What do you {heart} about Rhode Island?
I love to comb the beaches of southern Rhode Island for sea glass and other sea treasures.

9. Favorite place to take out-of-towners?
My favorite place to visit with out-of-towners is Watch Hill, Westerly, RI.

10. Any advice for new/wannabe makers?
Use your imagination and have fun creating.
