1. Tell us about your work.
The jewelry we create is from found objects on Rhode Island beaches. Our jewelry features hand-picked sea glass and shells encrusted with pyrite on either brass or silver plated cuff bracelets, sterling silver or gold plated chain, and sterling silver, brass plated, and gold filled earring posts and hoops. All shells and glass are hand-picked from Indonesia, Thailand, Hawaii, Rhode Island, and other New England beaches. These elements are sometimes on their own, and other times combined with semi-precious stones such as pearls, malachite, turquoise, hematite, and other various stones.

2. Is there a story behind the name of your business?
Glass.Rock.Beach. is the basis of our jewelry design and crafting materials, namely Rhode Island sea glass, pyrite for its iridescent quality. We source and hand-pick our sea glass and shells from the beaches we encounter. We are continuously inspired to search for sea glass, beautiful beach rocks, and shells on our Rhode Island beaches. Our business was formed out of a mutual love of creating ocean art. We are a mother daughter business creating jewelry featuring elements of the beach.

3. How did you come to be a professional artist/crafter/designer?
We have always enjoyed painting and working with different materials that provide functional and decorative products. The inspiration is usually sourced from nature. (Kiera) I grew up seeing my mom creating all this beautiful art, she was kind of a jack of all trades, painting, sewing, designing jewelry, upholstering furniture. I watched her attend RISD for Decorative Painting when I was finishing up high school. She inspired me to always be creative and to focus on the arts. As a result, I took as many art classes as possible in both high school and then in college, receiving a minor in Studio Art at the University of Rhode Island. I also always was interested in jewelry design and started playing around with beads and findings at a young age. As time went on I continued to create including painting and jewelry design, and enrolled in a semester of Introduction to Jewelry Design at RISD in my early 20’s. During my 6 years living on the island of Maui, I was always painting items I found on the beaches and in the jungles, and designing jewelry from the shells I picked on my daily beach hunts. In 2015, I moved back to Rhode Island to be closer to my family, and my mother and I resumed beach hunting. We continued to search for shells, but were also inspired to search for sea glass as well. We began doing this regularly, picking sea glass and designing jewelry pieces, and decided it was time to start our business. We take pride in the fact that our pieces are locally picked, designed, and handmade.

(Louann) I’m a graduate of Rhode Island School of Design where I majored in Decorative painting. I currently custom paint faux finishes on furniture and walls, such as marbling, glazing. I addition, I create hand-painted fabric purses, hand-painted jewelry, as well as designing sea glass and shell jewelry.

4. Where do you draw your inspiration?
(Kiera) I draw inspiration from my time living on the island of Maui where I snorkeled, went diving, and shell hunting on the many beautiful beaches I encountered. I also visited Indonesia and Thailand and collected many shells and found inspiration in the beauty, art, and indigenous people I came into contact with. I also draw inspiration from the fact that I grew up in the beautiful state of Rhode Island with our own share of gorgeous coastlines and beaches.

(Louann) As a twenty five year resident of the Rhode Island community, the coastal areas are our favorite places to walk and enjoy. The morning sun throughout all the seasons give way to a glistening and breathtaking view of the landscape and the ocean.

5. What’s your favorite item to create?
We both agree our favorite item to create is pyrite encrusted sea glass cuffs bracelets. We love the beautiful colors of glass we have found, and include these on brass and silver plated cuffs.

6. What’s your best seller?
Pyrite encrusted sea glass pendants are our best seller currently, but we are hoping through more networking and exposure that our shell designs will become just as desirable.

7. How long have you been in Rhode Island?
Our family moved to Rhode Island in 1988. (Louann) I have continued to live in Rhode Island since 1988. (Kiera) I lived in Rhode Island until 2009, when I got the opportunity to go work in a middle school on the island of Maui. I lived in Hawaii for 6 years before becoming home sick and wanting to be closer to family. I moved back to Rhode Island in 2015.

8. What do you {heart} about Rhode Island?
We love that beaches and water surround us, and that the beach is our favorite place to be! We love that we can pick beautiful natural treasures from our beaches to create our jewelry designs.

9. Favorite place to take out-of-towners?
Peabody’s beach is our secret spot. It is beautiful white sand on a protected ocean cove. And as true New Englanders, taking our out of town guests to get some good seafood at a water front restaurant is a must!

10. Any advice for new/wannabe makers?
Network, promote your business, get your name out there, and be persistent. We also encourage new/wannabe makers to love what they do. Be passionate, work hard, and always be humble to the beauty you encounter.

11. Please include anything else you’d like to add:
The philosophy behind Glass Rock Beach is believe in the art you create, wear it yourself and love it, and utilize as many found objects to come up with your product. We love creativity and are happy to design custom pieces as well.
