1. Tell us about your work
I have a card line that that covers all occasions but focuses on cards to send people going through cancer treatment and thank you cards for those being treated to send to their supporters, loved ones and teams.

My work is whimsical, positive, colorful and happy. As well working on my cards, I draw, paint, hook rugs, paint floor cloths and do commissioned portraits of people and animals.

2. Is there a story behind the name of your business?
I have a Scottish Terrier named Dorothy Parker. Like her namesake she is pithy, independent and full of life. I named my business after her, changing the Parker to Barker, because of the great joy she brings into my life and I hope to reflect that in my work.

3. How did you come to be a professional artist/crafter/designer?
I was an art major in college afterwards I was an art teacher and have worked as an artist in a number of different businesses; a court illustrator where I created graphics to help a jury understand the case, the staff artist at a company that supplied paint your own pottery studios and more. It wasn’t until I went through breast cancer that I was really inspired to create my own line of cards that would give the receipant a sense of hope and a smile.

4. Where do you draw your inspiration?
My positive outlook, my very funny sister and husband and Dorothy Parker.

5. What’s your favorite item to create?
I love making the characters for my cards. I make each separately, cutting out their bodies and then making and attaching their clothes. I then paint the backgrounds for the cards, place everyone/thing on the page and then scan the whole assembly into photoshop. It’s like creating a little world where I get to dress everyone!

6. What’s your best seller?
The Bald Dorothy card is my best selling card. I also do a lot of commissioned floor mats.

7. How long have you been in Rhode Island?
I have been in Rhode Island for 8 months and I LOVE IT!

8. What do you {heart} about Rhode Island?
I {heart} the people of Rhode Island; everyone is so friendly and willing to share and support new comers! I {heart} Providence and all the amazing homes and buildings and restaurants and shops!

9. Favorite place to take out-of-towners?
We live blocks away from the Ladd Observatory which is a little gem of architecture and history; we love to take visitors there. We also {heart} Posillipo in North Providence…an amazing little Italian restaurant.

10. Any advice for new/wannabe makers?
Everyone makes mistakes; find a good proof reader/editor to correct yours before you try and sell your work.

11. Please include anything else you’d like to add:
Thank you so much I {heart} Rhody for this interview and looking at my work!
