We visited the lighthouse on last summer when we were in Newport for the Tall Ships procession. My parents are big fans of the tall ships, since back in 1976 when they saw the flotilla come into New York Harbor. So they came up for a visit, and we staked out a spot on Goat Island to watch the parade of ships go up the harbor, under the Pell bridge and back. It was a lovely day.

While we were waiting, I took a little time to go check out the lighthouse that sits on the north end if of the island. It seems very small to me, though it apparently gets the job done.

Wikipedia says that the lighthouse we see today was built in 1842, and was off the coast of Goat Island. In the 1960s, a private developer bought the island to build what is now the Hyatt hotel. They filled in the gap between the lighthouse and the island, so you can walk right up to it now.

In the 1864 a keeper's house was added, though it was damaged by a submarine in 1921 and eventually demolished.

You can get a sense of how small the lighthouse is when you look at it next to that little two-story house..

Wikipedia also tells me that "[t]he first light on Goat Island was constructed in 1823-1824, but was later transported to Prudence Island in 1851 where the structure still remains as the Prudence Island Light." Another one on our list.

  1. LOL I'm trying to imagine the insurance claim where you say your house was damaged by a submarine

    1. It's one of the easier ones to access, too. Goat Island is a short bridge drive/walk out of Newport, right next to the Hyatt.

  3. Beautiful photos! I don't think I've ever seen that lighthouse. So quintessential New England!! We're looking to spend a Sat. or Sun. in Newport soon - we'll have to add it to the list :)

    1. It's a nice little lighthouse, and won't take long to see, but it's got a beautiful view around it.
