Artists ~ Yudi Chen ~ Providence

Artist’s name: Yudi Chen
Location: Providence, RI (but soon to be New Jersey)

1. Tell us about your work
I have a lot of different interests and mediums that I like to pursue in my work, but I think a lot of my work is very playful or humorous.

2. How did you come to be a professional artist/crafter?
I just recently graduated, so I'm still in that limbo between student artist and career artist.  I come from a family of scientists, so I'm a bit of an anomaly, but I never held the same passion, interest, and resolve for the academic as I did for art.  I liked math and science, but I saw them as more of a hobby than something to define myself by.

3. Where do you draw your inspiration?
I am inspired by a lot of things: interesting stories, different cultures, social issues, textiles, and many other artists.

4. What’s your best seller?
My Gender Reversed Fairy Tale series has been my most successful group of work.  Within that, I think Tarzana and John and The Little Merman are tied for top selling prints.

5. How long have you been in Rhode Island?
I went to Rhode Island for school (Rhode Island School of Design)

6. What do you {heart} about Rhode Island?
I love the historical buildings in Rhode Island - from the quaint colonial cottages to the cliffside mansions of Newport.  I also like that I can go to so many places by just walking around or taking public transportation.
