Shop Local ~ Jarred's Home Goods ~ Warwick

Jarred's Homegoods
51 Colonial Ave.
Warwick, Rhode Island
(866) 645-9108

I wasn't aware of Jarred's until I saw a Groupon for the store awhile back. I went with G., and it took us awhile to find the place. It's definitely off the beaten trail.

Jarred Homegoods

When we arrived, they had just closed for the day, although we and another couple of people had both read that the store closes at 6 on the Internet. They were very cheerful and gracious about re-opening for us and encouraged us to take our time.

Jarred's is named for the most recent of three generations of family members who own the consignment shop.

Jarred's Homegoods

There's Jarred with his mom and grandmother.

It's a good sized store with lots of stock, mostly home furnishings and decor, a little jewelry, too. Jarred was excited to tell us that they've just begun buying gold and silver as well.

Jarred's Homegoods

I found a great table and an antique sewing basket for Bear, both at reasonable prices, even before the Groupon kicked in.

Since it's a consignment/resale shop the offerings change regularly, and it's important to go back often to keep up with what's in stock. But it's worthwhile for the unique finds, great prices and truly friendly customer service. We could tell how enthusiastic the family is about their business.

Movie review ~ The Call of Cthulhu

The Call of Cthulhu is one of H.P. Lovecraft's best-known works, and has been made into a dozen movies. This version is particularly interesting because, although it was made in 2005, it was shot to look like the silent movies of the early 1920s. In fact, it is a silent movie.

It was an interesting story, though I couldn't say how close it is to the source material. It tells of a man who follows a series of leads he discovered in his granduncle's papers, and learns of a cult that worships Cthuhlu. Cthulhu is a priest or prophet of old gods, a monstrous betentacled creature that will one day rise from the depths of the sea to the glory of his followers.

It was fun to see some familiar Providence landmarks in the film. The decision to shoot as a black and white silent really lends to the old and creepy feel of the film.

Since The Call of Cthulhu was a short story, the movie is likewise short, only about 45 minutes. But well worth the time investment.

The Call of Cthulhu is available on Netflix and Hulu Plus with your subscription, and on Amazon to rent (free for Prime members).
