Design ~ Providence House Tour on Apartment Therapy

Joel + McKenzie's Loft in Monohasset Mill, Providence was featured on Apartment Therapy this week.

I love the way they've kept the industrial feel of the historic mill, and still managed to create a homey, fun environment.

...and I love love their kitchen!

That sink is awesome!

Museums ~ Blithewold, Bristol

101 Ferry Road (Rte. 114)
Bristol, Rhode Island

I took Bear and her out of town guest to check out Blithewold mansion over the Christmas holiday. They were both very excited by the holiday display that Blithewold calls its "Tiffany, Tinsel and Toys."
The original house, which burned down in 1906, had been a Queen Anne style built in 1896 by Augustus and Bessie Van Wickle and daughter Marjorie as a summer home. Bessie was an avid horticulturalist and worked with John DeWolf of Bristol (who also served as Superintendent of Prospect Park in New York) to design the grounds.
Augustus died suddenly  in 1898 and the birth of daughter Augustine came just a few months afterward. Bessie continued to use Blithewold, even after her remarriage to William McKee in 1901. Blithewold burned down in 1905, but neighbors helped rescue much of the furnishings and fixtures, and the house was rebuilt in the English Manor style in 1906.

After Bessie's death, daughter Marjorie continued…

I was so sad to hear that the historic Edgewood Yacht Club was lost in a fire on Jan. 12.  EYC was one of the first places I visited (discovered quite by accident as I was driving around exploring) after moving to Rhode Island. A member kindly invited me in as his guest and I had the chance to look around the building and walk out onto the docks. In fact, the first photo I ever sold was of some boats moored there:

The yacht club itself was incorporated in 1889, and the original building was constructed in 1903-04. After it burned down, the current (former) clubhouse was built.

Edgewood was the oldest yacht clubhouse in the state. It was built in 1908 by architects Murphy, Hindle and Wright, and was the last surviving of its type, once common in the region. EYC club members played an integral role in the sport of yacht racing in Narragansett Bay.

The wooden structure burned quickly in the early morning hours of Jan. 12, 2011, but t…
